Mark Ruffalo To Appear With Emma Stone In Searchlight Pictures' Poor Things. This is a film that takes Frankenstein's story and reimagines it in a whole new way.
Best known for his role as Bruce Banner or The Hulk of the MCU, Mark Ruffalo has carved a name for himself as one of the top actors of cinema. He has successfully won three Oscar awards in recent years. It was announced today that he will appear alongside Emma Stone in Searchlight Pictures' “Poor Things”.
“Poor Things” itself is a film that takes Frankenstein's story and rearranges it in a whole new way. This is the first new role announced for Ruffalo since he took home a Golden Globe award for his double role in “I Know This Much To Be True”.
"Poor Things," which is director Yorgos Lanthimos' first film since "The Favorite", has received multiple award nominations including awards at the British Independent Film Awards, the Oscars and the Golden Globes, also starring Emma Stone. The film is based on a book by Scottish writer Alasdair Gray.
The novel itself is described as a "thought-provoking duel between male desire and women's independence" and is a Victorian literary delivery taking its main theme. "Poor Things" was adapted by Tony McNamara who previously worked with director Lanthimos when he co-wrote the script for "The Favorite".
The story of Poor Things centers on Emma Stones' character Victoria, who takes drastic measures to escape her abusive husband and drown herself. Then comes a surgeon, who brings Victoria back to life using the fetal brain that Victoria was carrying when she drowned.
The doctor inserted her into Victoria's head and brought her back to life as the child-minded Bella Baxter. It took time for Bella's baby brain to begin to develop social awareness, but during that time she managed to become engaged to a Glaswegian doctor, and to escape with a dishonest lawyer on an adventure across Europe.
Everything was going well for Victoria before she was discovered by her ex-husband and things started to get interesting. Production of the film is expected to start at the end of the year and is likely to be released next year.
