Hey coderGirls! One of the major goals in coderGirls is to close the gender gap in computer science. A major way of doing this is by learning and hearing about women in tech who are making a difference. Without inspiring women like these or programs that try to reduce the gender stereotypes that come from being in computing, many would not have the courage to be able to go into a tech start up knowing that they might be the only female there or to try to get leadership roles in the up-and-coming industry. These incredible groups of people created and help provide the opportunity for anyone of any gender to be anything that they want to be, no matter what others will say. As a girl who has been through the struggles of being a female in tech, it gives me so much happiness and excitement to be able to talk to you about the incredible community that the women in tech group is. However I am not going to be listing the most famous people, instead I am going to talk about the girls who do not typically get in the spotlight... the girls like you!
If you want to hear about women in tech who are changing the world, you do not need to look up a top ten list of famous entrepreneurs. In fact, many of the most inspiring females in the computing industry might be close to your age. I know.. it sounds strange how people who are teenagers can be changing a whole group of people when it has been a certain way for a very long time. Well, times are changing and with groups like the National Center for Women and Information Technology, teens everywhere are able to make a difference in the tech world. The Aspirations in Computing Award which was created by NCWIT has been giving much needed attention to inspiring girls who are proving that just because they are young, that they can make just much as a difference if they were an adult. The most amazing part about the Aspirations in Computing is the community. If you want to hear about an inspiring story about a female in tech, well a girl from an area not unlike your own could be starting their own robotics team! While reading about inspiring entrepreneurs is incredible and shows what you can do in a number of years, hearing about the girls from the Aspirations in Computing community show that you can start a revolution at thirteen!
So, in the future, the leaders of tech might be the children who want to change the world! These groups like NCWIT are showing the world that it is possible. But, not only them... you all are as well! Being a part of coderGirls is defying the gender gap that has been in place for generations! Just by sitting and learning to code Python or making a cool game in Scratch, you are changing the world! You all make up the female in tech group and show everyone what girls are capable of.
Keep being amazing!
